YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly rocked our socks off!

On Tuesday the 4th graders and their teachers dragged themselves out of bed extra early so that we could trek up the Blue Ridge Mountains to visit Black Mountain, North Carolina's YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly.  We were a little concerned with the forecast for rain and the looming clouds; however, as it turns out, a little rain only added to our mountain exploration!

While we were there, we participated in three different activities: a predator-prey simulation game, nature walk, and mountain stream exploration.  We got to visit the NC mountain region, learn about animal adaptations, rocks and minerals, nature, wildlife, and explore the mountain's landforms and natural resources.  It was a wonderful trip filled with lots of hiking, discovery and fun.  Check out our pictures and video!
We were so glad to see this after our very long bus ride!
The mountains were "so beautiful"!
This was our view as we ate lunch!  We couldn't get enough of the fall colors!!!!
Navigating the slippery rocks in the mountain stream proved to be a challenge.  No injuries ... crisis averted!
Cesar found a salamander...which i proceeded to name "Bert"!  Did you know that salamanders will drop their tail if a predator is chasing it so that it can get away?  Then later it's tail will grow back?!?!  It can even regrow it's own eyeball!!! Eeeewwww!!!
Joshua was a pro at the predator-prey game!  Those herbivores and omnivores didn't stand a chance!
Up close with ... poison ivy!
Who knew there was so much to discover on a nature walk?
We sat back and listened to The Great Smokey Mountain Salamander Ball before we headed to explore mountain streams.  We very much appreciated the time to kick back, relax and listen to the story on the front porch.
Although you can't see them all...there were ladybugs everywhere!
The White House...nope!  This is in the center of the facility and where we got to relax on rocking chairs as we ate lunch and enjoyed the view.
Derek's crayfish...he did have some help from Jacqueline though.  :-)
